“Art is the real you, the real feeling, the one place to be totally honest,” says artist Kyle Lind, and it’s that self-revealing spirit that emanates from each of his works. From Art Center to the corporate world to the psychedelic, to learn Lind’s life story is to take a crash course in the counterculture that pervaded Los Angeles during the 1960s and 1970s.

Lind has painted steadily for the last 50 years, but almost entirely out of the public eye. Now, at the age of 72, he is ready to release more than four dozen works from three series, many of which have taken decades to complete. “I was doing process art before it was called Process Art,” he explains. “I started trying to find me with art, and I did it with making these little marks, and I would meditate for long periods of time.” Those little marks—over many, many years—became elaborate and profoundly intricate works that reflect not only Lind’s deep spirituality but his remarkable survival.
